Assistance to Irish citizens abroad
In 2017 the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade provided support to over 2,500 Irish citizens in distress abroad. This involved assisting in situations involving missing persons, mental health welfare concerns and arrests. Regrettably, this figure also includes over 300 bereavements of Irish citizens overseas, the highest number of deaths the Department has ever dealt with in a single year.
It is clear that more Irish people are travelling overseas than ever before and this presents fresh challenges to officials in my Department to ensure that we continue to provide a world class service for our people across the globe. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade provides a range of help and support to citizens in distress abroad and we are committed to constantly improving how we provide this assistance, and to ensuring that our staff across our global network of Embassies and Consulates act in a highly professional manner at all times.
