Update on Provision of Passport Services

Our public offices are closed until further notice. Passport Service staff have been redeployed to assist public service delivery during this public health emergency.

You can still apply for your passport using Passport Online and it will be processed once our service resumes. Online applications that require the posting of supporting documents to your nearest Embassy or Consulate should not be posted at this time.

Post Offices in Ireland will not be accepting applications made via the Passport Express system during this time. If you have already sent an application, your application is safe and will be processed once we resume services.

Our phones lines are also closed. If you need a passport for travel in a genuine emergency (death or serious illness of a family member or for emergency medical treatment of the applicant), please contact us through our Webchat service.

We have stopped processing Foreign Birth Registrations. If you have already sent an application for Foreign Birth Registration, your application is safe and will be processed once we resume services.

For the most up to date travel advice please check: If you are abroad, you should contact your local Irish Embassy or Consulate. They can advise you about your options for travel.

We advise citizens to follow HSE guidelines on restricting movements.

Latest passport turnaround information

These turnaround times are for applications submitted in Ireland, Great Britain and via our Passport Online service. Turnaround times are estimates based on current averages. They are not a service delivery guarantee.

If you submitted a paper based application through an Embassy or Consulate abroad, please see the Embassy website for your country of residence.

Passport Online: First time applicants

Irish citizens can apply for first time passports and renewals online if they are resident in

  • Ireland,
  • Northern Ireland,
  • Great Britain,
  • the European Union,
  • Iceland,
  • Liechtenstein,
  • Norway
  • Switzerland

This fast, secure and convenient service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

If you have already submitted a paper application, you cannot apply online.

Complex renewals

This is when you have to submit extra documentation or you are changing information on your passport. For example, this could be changing your name or a lost or stolen passport. All applications for children are complex renewals. This is because the consent of all guardians has to be verified.

Simple renewals

This is when all the information on your passport is the same as your previous passport.

First time applicants

This is the first time you have applied for your Irish passport.

If you need to submit extra documents, the average turnaround time starts when we receive them.

Postage time is not included in the average turnaround time. Postage will be longer for applicants outside of Ireland.

Passport appointments

If you require a passport to be renewed in a timeframe shorter than what is offered by the Passport Online or Passport Express, you can make an appointment at the Passport office in Dublin or Cork.

For those who need to renew their passport and are travelling within the next three days, the Passport Service operates a limited rapid renewal service at the Passport Office in Dublin.

This service is strictly by appointment only. There are a limited number of appointments available per day and proof of travel will be required.
