30 September 2021In September the Embassy was proud to join EU colleagues in Malta to profile initiatives on how we can attain the European Green Deal together and tackle climate change & environmental degradation.
For this Facebook campaign we chose to talk about policies and practices Ireland has introduced to support and conserve pollinators such as the honeybee, and how this supports the sustainability of our food production.
Ireland was one of the first countries in Europe to address the impact of pollination on agriculture and the environment in 2015 with our first All-Ireland Pollination Plan.
In April 2021 we released the second phase of this Plan, which aims to:
- Make farmland pollinator friendly by working with farming communities;
- Make public land pollinator friendly including school projects where students are encouraged to establish their own micro-pollinator plots and learn about nature;
- Make private land pollinator friendly by replanting previously bare grassy spaces with pollinator friendly plants;
- Create an All-Ireland Honeybee Strategy that balanced managed and wild pollinator populations;
- Conserve rare pollinators;
- Raise awareness and increase our evidence base.
