Support for the United Nations is a cornerstone of Irish foreign policy and on the 1st January 2021, Ireland took its seat as an elected member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2021-2022 term. However, in practice, what does this mean for Ireland and what is the value in it being a member of the UNSC?
The SIBN, in conjunction with the Embassy of Ireland to Spain, are delighted to host the Political Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Sonja Hyland, in a discussion on UNSC Membership, what it means for Ireland and what are the key objectives for Ireland’s term on the council.
Sonja Hyland is a career Diplomat, who prior to taking up her role as the Political Director at the Department of Foreign Affaris in August 2019, served as the Ambassador of Ireland to Ethiopia & the African Union. She has previously served as Ambassador of Ireland to Mexico as well as Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Ireland to Spain.
The Ambassador of Ireland to Spain, Síle Maguire, will open the event and there will be an opportunity for Q&A for all attendees.
The event will be available to view here from 17:30 (CET) on the 22 April 2021
