Ireland and Denmark: 50 years in the EU

Tomorrow marks the 50th anniversary of Ireland signing the treaty of accession to join the European Union (EU). But did you know, that Denmark signed the treaty on the same day?
The year after, on 1 January 1973, Ireland and Denmark officially became part of the EU. That was the beginning of a greater cooperation and a better connectivity between our countries and other EU member states.
As small, trade oriented economies, Ireland and Denmark have much in common in our approach to international affairs. This can be seen in an EU context, in Brussels, but also in terms of shared views on many issues in relation to the United Nations (UN) and Development Aid work.
The ongoing relationship is evident as the Irish Community, living and working in Denmark, continues to grow. This community includes business people, students on university exchanges and Irish people who have simply decided to call Denmark “home”.
Culturally our two countries share common interests as Irish traditional music enjoys widespread popularity in Denmark with Irish groups touring the country regularly.
In order to mark the occasion, the European Parliament Liaison Office in Denmark, the European Parliament Liaison Office in Ireland, The Danish Embassy in Ireland and the Irish Embassy in Denmark, invited Irish people living in Denmark and Danish people living in Ireland to share their thoughts about how being EU citizen’s has made a difference in their lives.
The outcome was a few videos, that we will share over the coming weeks.
