On 14th August, the Embassy, alongside Zetafilms Argentina, had the pleasure of hosting the Argentine premiere of Oscar-nominated movie “The Quiet Girl”, directed by Colm Bairéad and based on the novella “Foster” by award-winning Irish novelist Claire Keegan.
We were delighted to welcome the novella’s Argentine translator, Lic. Jorge Fondebrider, and publishers, Eterna Cadencia, to the pre-screening event. The novella is translated as “Tres Luces” and widely available in Argentina.
The film is a coming-of-age drama, filmed mostly in the Irish language. It has become the highest-grossing Irish-language film ever made, and the first Irish-language production to receive an Oscar nomination.
Addressing cinema-goers, Consul Sarah Maguire, highlighted the cultural momentum that Ireland is enjoying in 2023, saying:
“This year has been truly incredible for Irish artists. We’ve received 14 Oscar nominations, an absolute record for us, and let me tell you that the cultural momentum will carry on. Ireland’s government plan includes a strong backing across the arts. We have invited a number of agencies and secretariats of art, cinema and literature here this evening and I’d like to tell you all that we are very interested in learning more about how we can increase cultural collaboration and exchange between our countries.”
The Quiet Girl premiered on the 17th of August across Argentina, and is playing at various cinemas throughout the country, with a premiere date for Uruguay also scheduled in early September.
