Consulate General of Ireland Creating Our Future Roundtable
Blog
25 November 2021On Tuesday 23 November, Consulates General of Ireland San Francisco and Los Angeles hosted a roundtable discussion for Science Foundation Ireland’s “Creating Our Future” campaign. Earlier this year, the Government of Ireland launched Creating our Future - a campaign to stimulate a national conversation that generates ideas from the people of Ireland to inform the direction of research in our country.
Attendees heard from Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, TD about the importance of capturing the voice of Ireland’s global diaspora. The West Coast of the United States is home to some of the most ground-breaking research, science and technology.
To learn more about the Creating our Future campaign, Dr. Siobhan Roche, Science Foundation Ireland Director, Science for the Economy provided insight into SFI’s campaign and how the data collected will be used.
Our roundtable was also joined by Professor Charles Spillane, Director of the Ryan Institute at NUI Galway, who’s current research is co-funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and SFI. Learn more about his work on TAPAS here.
We then split into breakout rooms to discuss the challenges and opportunities for Irish research where we had some truly fascinating and insightful conversations, with topics ranging from the future of the global diet to more human-centric AI! Many thanks to all who joined us on the day and to SFI for hosting this campaign. All of these ideas have been collected and will be presented to the Minister Harris to feed into the national conversation on the future of Irish research.
