Children's Christmas Card Competition

Children's Christmas Card Competition

At Christmas time, friends and families come together to celebrate the end of another year while sharing hopes and dreams for the year to come. It is an important time to reflect on the year gone by and to strengthen and renew relationships and friendships. This year we may not be able to come together in the ways we have before, so connecting with our loved ones is even more important. Christmas cards have been shared in Ireland and across the world for over a 100 years. Each year, at the Consulate General of Ireland in Edinburgh, we send Christmas cards to friends and colleagues, old and new, in Ireland, Scotland and across the world.

Christmas cards are especially important this year, to share best wishes for the year ahead and to let the significant people in our lives know that we are thinking of them. 2020 has been a difficult year for us all. We have not been able to see our friends and colleagues for a long time, but we are thinking of them more than ever. So, this year, we need our Consulate Christmas card to be extra special.

That’s why we are asking the children of Scotland to help us to create our Christmas card. Thinking of the environment, we will be sending e-cards instead of paper cards. What we need is beautiful artwork that captures the significance of this very special Christmas which we can then make into an e-card. Email us a photo of your painting or drawing and we will choose one to use in the Christmas e-card we send. We have special prizes for the best artwork we receive from enthusiastic young artists.

For full details please read the information below carefully, and then ask your kids to get creative!

Prizes

The competition will be split into three age groups (4 – 6, 7 – 9, 10 -13), with a winner in each group, as well as an overall winner.

The artwork will be judged by the team at the Consulate General of Ireland, along with the Director of the Edinburgh Art Festival, Sorcha Carey.

The prize for each category will be a selection of books written and/ or illustrated by Irish children’s authors.

The winners in each category will have their entries published on the Consulate’s social media pages and website. The overall winner will have their card used as the Consulate’s e-Christmas card with their name, age and town noted.

How to enter

1)      Ask your kids to create a picture that encapsulates what is so special about this Christmas. Entrants can use any artistic medium or combination of mediums (e.g. paint, coloured pencils, felt-tip pens, crayons) with the exception of glitter due to its negative effect on the environment and the fact that it doesn’t photograph well.

  • Dimensions: Landscape or widescreen ratio (16:9) will work best but we can also accept square images. Please do not send portrait orientation.
