Travel Advice for Fans Attending Switzerland -v- Republic of Ireland, Euro 2020 Qualification

11 October 2019On Tuesday 15th October 2019, the Republic of Ireland will play Switzerland in a Euro 2020 qualification match at Stade de Genève in Geneva.
This page is intended as an advisory for Irish citizens who are travelling to Switzerland for this match.
Know Before You Go: Travel Tips
- Get comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling and check what it covers. You should note that medical treatment in Switzerland can be extremely expensive.
- Travel with your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which can be applied for through the HSE.
- You should carry a form of photo identification at all times. Make sure you have copies of your passport and other ID in case you lose it.
- Fill in the emergency contact details page on your passport
- Keep your valuables in a safe place.
- Keep a bank card and some cash separate from the rest of your valuables and avoid carrying too many valuables with you.
- Beware of pick pockets at train stations, airports, in crowds, restaurants, cafés, on public transport, near ATMs and never leave your bag or belongings out of sight or unattended.
- Let people know where you are and make sure you know where your friends are.
- Travel well in advance to the stadium. The match begins at 19.45.
Transportation
Stade de Genève is located at 16, Route des Jeunes, Geneva and can be reached from the centre of the city easily by tram and bus, or by taxi.
Tourists can be supplied with a free public transport card by their hotel. You can request this at hotel reception.
Security
You should exercise caution in large gatherings; be careful with your personal belongings, remain calm in crowds, respect the crowd restrictions at some locations and follow the instructions of the local authorities and the event organisers. Please be aware that, while crime rates are low in Geneva, pick pockets may target this event.

To Remember
Local currency is the Swiss Franc (CHF). While Irish debit and credit cards can usually be used, you should be aware of potential charges.
Check with your mobile phone provider about roaming charges. Switzerland is not covered by the recent changes to EU roaming charges.
Swiss electrical sockets are different to those in neighbouring countries, (Type J). Make sure you have the ability to use any electrical products you will need.
Lost / Stolen Passport
If your Irish passport is lost or stolen, please contact the Embassy of Ireland. If necessary, the Embassy can issue an emergency travel document to get you home.
Required Documentation
- Completed passport application form;
- Four passport photographs;
- Copy of lost / stolen passport if possible;
- Any other ID available;
- Police report of loss / theft;
- Proof of travel arrangements.
Additionally for under-18s
- Consent from legal guardian(s)
- Photo ID of guardians
