Ambassador Orla Tunney participated on 14 May 2019 in a memorial organised by the Friends of the British Cemetery in Elvas. The ceremony, held every year, pays homage to the members of Wellington’s Army who fought with Portugal against Napoleon’s forces at the Battle of La Albuera during the Peninsular Wars, 209 years ago. A large number of Irishmen served in the British Army in this campaign. The Commander of the Portuguese Army at the time was also Irish-born: Marshall William Carr Beresford was born in Waterford in 1768.
Ambassador laid a wreath to commemorate the Battle of Albuera and spoke about the substantial participation of Irish-born soldiers in the British Army during the Peninsular Wars. She expressed her deep gratitude that such a conflict is today unthinkable in Europe. Photo credits: Linha de Elvas
