European Day of Languages 2018
News
26 September 2018
The European Day of Languages is celebrated every year on 26 September. It promotes the rich linguistic diversity of Europe, with: over 200 European languages, 24 official EU languages, around 60 regional and minority languages, any many more languages spoken by people from across the world.
EUNIC – European Union National Institutes for Culture, which the Embassy of Ireland in Warsaw is a member of, has for many years organised, together with the European Commission Representation in Poland and the European Parliament Office in Poland, a series of events promoting the linguistic diversity of Europe.
The Embassy of Ireland has organised Irish language lessons over Skype, which this year will take place in schools in Sierpiec, Żywiec, Warsaw, Poznań, Nowym Tomyśl and Gorzów.
Ambassador Emer O’Connell sends her best regards to all EDL participants.
MESSAGE FOR EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES 2018
2018 is an important year for the Irish language. This year we celebrate Bliain na Gaeilge (Irish language year), marking 125 years since the revival of the Irish language movement. The Irish language is intrinsic to our culture and heritage, celebrated in so many different ways across our music, literature and dance. Most importantly however, Irish is a living language, embraced amongst people, homes and schools across Ireland.
I am delighted therefore that through the European Day of Languages 2018, people across Europe have the opportunity to discover for themselves the richness and diversity of the Irish language.
As we say in celebrating Bliain na Gaeilge – “labhair í, spreag í, bain taitneamh aisti”!*
Is íontach í an Ghaeilge!
*speak it; encourage it and enjoy it!

TEACHTAIREACHT MAIDIR LE LÁ EORPACH NA DTEANGACHA 2018
Is bliain thábhachtach í 2018 don Ghaeilge. Déantar Bliain na Gaeilge a chomóradh i mbliana, ag comóradh 125 bliain ó athbheochan na Gaeilge. Tá an Ghaeilge fite fuaite inár gcultúr agus inár
n-oidhreacht agus déantar í a cheiliúradh i mbealaí éagsúla inár gceol, litríocht agus damhsa. Ach, níos tábhachtaí ná sin, is teanga beo í an Ghaeilge, agus labhraíonn daoine í i dteaghlaigh agus i scoileanna ar fud na hÉireann.
Is cúis áthais dom mar sin go mbeidh deis ag daoine ar fud na hEorpa blaiseadh a fháil den Ghaeilge mar chuid de Lá Eorpach na dTeangacha 2018 agus go mbeidh siad in ann saibhreas agus éagsúlacht na teanga a fhiosrú dóibh féin.
Mar a deirimid agus muid ag ceiliúradh Bliain na Gaeilge – “labhair í, spreag í, bain taitneamh aisti”!
Is íontach í an Ghaeilge!
