16 Days Against GBV campaign - Banda Kakana concert to raise awareness
The Embassy of Ireland in Mozambique was pleased to show its support to 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence (GBV), the annual international campaign that calls for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
A staff video was produced to kick-start the campaign, with the Ambassador and other members of the team speaking out on the importance of the campaign’s message and the commitment the Embassy has to empowering women and bringing an end to GBV.
Throughout the campaign, the Embassy produced various posts for social media to highlight the importance of supporting gender-focused work, identifying risk factors, and supporting victims of GBV under activities promoted within the different partnerships and areas of work.
The last day of the campaign was marked by the participation of the Ambassador and staff from the Embassy in the distribution of 150 books in Guava Primary school in Marracuene within the scope of our partnership with Kioni, an initiative that empowers young girls with an emphasis on education.
For the finale event of the campaign the Embassy partnered with Banda Kakana, a local Mozambican band on a concert to raise awareness about gender-based violence in Mozambique. In addition to being a group of talented musicians, Banda Kakana also dedicate themselves to social activism and use their fame to advocate on gender empowerment and women’s rights.
The concert featured powerful performances of song, poetry and drama, by artists including Yolanda Chicane (singer), Gigliola Zacara (actress), Iracema de Sousa (poet and presenter), Sheila Marilis (social activist), Tchakaze (singer), Sizaquel (singer) and Argentina Luís (singer). Together they shared messages that focused on empowering women, guaranteeing equal rights and inclusion in society, and highlighting the difficulties that women and girls face.
