St Brigid's Day Essay Competition - Deadline 26 February 2021

The Embassy of Ireland in Kuala Lumpur, is excited to announce a St. Brigid's Day essay competition, that will run for the month of February 2021.

The competition is open to students aged 9 to 14 years old, who live in Malaysia. We invite you to write a short essay (maximum 500 words) on an inspiring woman in your life. This inspiring woman can be a family member, friend, or neighbour; a teacher; a famous female figure or even a fictional character, who represents an inspirational woman to you. Tell us about them, and why they inspire you, and how they motivate you to follow your dreams.

The overall winner and the runner up will receive a selection of books (pictured below), authored by Irish women writers, and including books about inspirational Irish women.

It is intended that the winner and runner-up will be announced at a virtual Embassy event on International Women’s Day, Monday 8th March 2021.

 About St Brigid's Day

The first day of February has been celebrated in Ireland for many centuries as St Brigid's Day, or in the Irish language, Lá Fhéile Bríde. As the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins stated in his 2021 Lá Fhéile Bríde message , St Brigid was a “woman who rejected the conventions of her time, who dedicated herself to innovation in the realm of education, and who, in seeking to ensure that her voice was heard in a male-dominated world, had to summon an extraordinary courage, transcend obstacles and not just survive, but put a new version of things in place”.

Inspired by St Brigid's Day (which also heralds the beginning of Spring in Ireland), our Foreign Ministry in Dublin and our missions abroad now use the occasion to highlight the talent, creativity and contribution of the women who have both shaped Ireland and the world.
