Happy New Year! 

Welcome to the Consulate’s first newsletter of 2023. We hope you all had a good break over Christmas and had a great start to the New Year. 

In this issue, you can check out our exciting upcoming events in January and February.

The final stop of the James Joyce Ulysses100 touring exhibition will take place in Gießen this month. You can find further information in the upcoming events section below. 

To celebrate St. Brigid’s Day and continue our events series marking 50 years of Ireland’s membership of the European Union, the Consulate will host an event on 1 February focused on the topic of ‘Gender Equality in Europe: Are we there yet?’ 

Our Consulate Book Club will return in February – check out what books we will be reading in our Spring/Summer series below. We would love to see new members join us this year, so please spread the word.

Pop Up Gaeltacht, 15 January 

Tá an Pop Up Gaeltacht ar ais! 

The Pop-Up Gaeltacht returns to Frankfurt Art Bar in Sachsenhausen on 15 January from 16.30. This relaxed Irish language meetup provides a wonderful opportunity to speak, practice and learn Irish - all levels of Irish, including beginners, are welcome.

 If you don't speak Irish, but are interested in listening in or learning more about the Irish language, then please do pop by. 

Frankfurt GAA Quiz, 17 January 

Want to test your knowledge of sport, music, entertainment, Irish and world trivia? 

Our friends at Eintracht Frankfurt Sarsfields GAA are hosting a table quiz to support their youth division on 17 January. The quiz will take place in Irish Pub Bornheim from 8pm.

International James Joyce Ulysses100 Exhibition in Gießen, 18 January 

To conclude our James Joyce travelling exhibition tour, the Consulate will travel to Gießen Town Hall for the official launch on 18 January. 

The exhibition will be on display in the Atrium at the Town Hall until 3 February this year. If you would like to come along to the launch or visit the exhibition, you can find out further information here. 

St. Brigid’s Day Event, Gender Equality in Europe: Are we there yet? 1 February 

To mark St. Brigid’s Day 2023, the Consulate will host an event on 1 February focused on the topic of ‘Gender Equality in Europe: Are we there yet?’ 

We are very much looking forward to welcoming an esteemed panel of female leaders who will consider, from both a professional and personal standpoint, the changes they have experienced over the course of their careers relating to gender equality, and will also set out their views on where further progress is required – particularly in their fields of business, finance and politics – and on issues like the gender pay gap.

Book Club Spring/Summer Series 2023 

The Consulate is delighted to present our Spring/Summer Book Club Series for 2023. 

We would like to sincerely thank everyone who sent us in their reading suggestions, it was very difficult to narrow the list down. 

We will kick off with "Listen to the Land Speak" by Manchán Magan on 15 February. It is possible to attend online or in-person. If you would like to join, keep an eye on our social media channels for registration. We are looking forward to seeing you all again and we welcome any new members who would like to come along! 

Events of Interest in Frankfurt

“The Banshees of Inisherin” Frankfurt Screenings, 10 – 24 January 

Have you seen "The Banshees of Inisherin" yet? 

The Arthouse Kinos in Frankfurt, Eldorado and Harmonie, are screening the film on various dates over the month of January! The film has already received widespread acclaim from critics and recently picked up three awards at the 80th Golden Globe Awards.

The Book of Kells Exhibition in Haus am Dom Frankfurt, 10 January - 12 March 

Haus am Dom in Frankfurt have their Book of Kells Exhibition on display until 12 March this year. If you would like to visit the exhibition, go directly to the Haus am Dom website for information.
