Our mission is to promote and protect abroad the values, interests and economic well-being of Ireland and its people. We do this under the political direction of our Ministers, through our staff at home and through our Embassy network abroad.

 

 

The Consulate General of Ireland, Cardiff was re-established in 2019. Our purpose is to enhance the strong connection between Ireland and Wales, by fostering deeper cooperation, trade and understanding between our two countries. We work closely with Ireland’s Embassy and State Agencies. The Ireland-Wales Shared Statement and Joint Action Plan 2021-25, launched with the Welsh Government earlier this year, provides a framework for strengthening the vibrant and varied connections across the Irish Sea. 

 

An opportunity has arisen for a Public Diplomacy Officer to join the Consulate General of Ireland, Cardiff. We are seeking to recruit a resourceful, experienced, proactive and flexible individual to join a team of diplomatic and locally recruited staff at a busy diplomatic mission. 

 

 

Role:

  • Candidates must have a minimum of one year’s previous experience in a policy, public affairs, or international relations role or environment
  • Taking a lead role to develop and deliver the Consulate’s public diplomacy projects and outreach activities
  • Planning and of events, including high-level visits (incorporating online and hybrid events)
  • Acting as a contact point for the Consulate and developing relationships with specific sectors
  • Contact and network management including maintenance of electronic contacts database
  • Leading the Consulate’s social media strategy, including content creation and maintaining digital presence
  • Representation at meetings & events; note taking
  • Research and report writing including assistance on specific public diplomacy projects; media monitoring and literature reviews
  • General office administration duties as required
  • Providing occasional consular advice to Irish citizens
  • Providing cover for other team members as required

 

Essential requirements:

  • Candidates must have a minimum of one year’s previous experience in a policy, public affairs, or international relations role or environment
  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate through work based examples a confident approach to networking
  • Candidates must have a minimum of one year’s experience of event management and delivery
  • Candidates must have a minimum of one year’s experience of working with social media platforms
  • Candidates must demonstrate excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills; effective team working and an ability to deal with people in external organisations
  • Candidates must show previous experience of research and report writing, preferably in the field of public affairs/politics/international relations
  • Candidates should provide examples of being solutions-oriented, and committed to delivering results  
  • Candidates must provide evidence of flexibility, efficiency and effectiveness showing strong organisational skills, attention to detail, able to work under pressure and to manage multiple tasks
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Outlook & Excel
  • High level of discretion, commitment, reliability and attention to detail
  • Candidates must have a legal entitlement to live and work in the United Kingdom

 

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of Welsh language
  • Understanding of Welsh political and economic landscape

 

 

Terms and conditions of employment:

  • The successful candidates will be hired on a 12 month fixed-term contractual basis with a six month probationary period and will be based at the Irish Consulate in Cardiff.
  • The salary for the position is £24,208.04  per annum, paid locally on a weekly basis. Salaries are paid direct to a bank account. Therefore, the successful candidate must have a bank account.

Security Clearance for Local Staff

 

Police vetting will be sought in respect of individuals who come under consideration for appointment. If resident in the UK, the successful candidate will be required to submit a DBS certificate issued within the last year. Enquiries may also be made with the police force of any country in which the applicant under consideration for appointment resided. If the applicant subsequently comes under consideration for another position, they will be required to supply relevant information again.
