About the National Gallery of Ireland
The National Gallery of Ireland is located in the centre of Dublin with one entrance on Merrion Square, beside Leinster House, and another on Clare Street. It was founded in 1854 and opened its doors to the public ten years later, in 1864.
The building was designed by Francis Fowke, based on early plans by Charles Lanyon where the façade of the building copies the Natural History building of the National Museum of Ireland.
The National Gallery of Ireland has an excellent and extensive collection of Irish paintings including the Yeats Collection, displaying more than 30 works by Irish impressionist Jack B Yeats (1871-1957), considered one of Ireland’s most important 20th century painters.
Works by Rembrandt and French impressionists; a Spanish collection with paintings by El Greco, Goya, Picasso; Italian works from early Renaissance from Tintoretto, Titan and Caravaggio’s The Taking of Christ (1602) are spread out in its four wings.
