Netherlands-Irish Relations

The Embassy plays an important role in fostering the strong and close relationship between Ireland and The Netherlands.

Diplomatic relations between Ireland and The Netherlands were established in 1945 and the Irish Embassy in The Hague was opened in 1950. Ireland and The Netherlands maintain a good political relationship with many ministerial visits taking place between the two countries. The Netherlands is a major trading partner for Ireland, and the fifth largest importer of Irish goods.

Ireland and The Netherlands work together in the EU on a number of issues that are important to both, such as agriculture, fisheries and institutional matters.

Ireland is also a popular destination for tourists from The Netherlands. Almost a quarter of a million visitors take advantage of direct flights from Amsterdam, Masstricht and Eindhoven with Dublin and the Wild Atlantic Way being popular destinations.

Cultural exchanges regularly take place between Ireland and The Netherlands in the fields of classical music, visual arts, literature, architecture, design and ballet. The National Gallery of Ireland has a permanent collection of Dutch paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries, including works by masters such as Vermeer and Rembrandt.
