On 6 December 2016, Ambassador Kelly formally presented his credentials to the Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, His Excellency Mr Ahmet Üzümcü.

Ambassador Kelly will now act as Ireland's Permanent Representative to the OPCW, actively contributing to the important work of the Organisation to achieve a world free of chemical weapons. During the ceremony, Ambassador Kelly spoke with the Director General about the high importance that Ireland places on non-proliferation and disarmament issues. Achieving a world free from the threat of all weapons of mass destruction is a longstanding priority of Ireland's foreign policy.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, based in The Hague, is the implementing body of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). As of today the OPCW has 192 Member States, who are working together to achieve a world free of chemical weapons. Ireland has been a State Party to the Convention since its entry into force in 1997.
