Statement by Minister Flanagan - the United Nations Security Council of Resolution 2270 on the DPRK

Statement by Minister Flanagan following the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of Resolution 2270 on the DPRK

I welcome the unanimous adoption by the United Nations Security Council of Resolution 2270, which was co-sponsored by Ireland and 49 other Member States, including all 28 EU Member States.

The resolution imposes tough new sanctions, and targets the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) ability to finance its illegal nuclear, WMD and ballistic missile programmes. The measures imposed are not intended to have adverse humanitarian consequences for the civilian population of the DPRK.

I once again urge the DPRK to comply fully with international obligations, to cease all nuclear testing and re-engage with the Six Party Talks on the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, immediately and without preconditions.
