Ireland vs. Poland in Warsaw
Ireland will play Poland on Sunday, 11 October in Warsaw in the final match of the group stages of the UEFA 2016 European Championship qualifiers.
Thousands of Irish fans will travel to Warsaw for the match, just as they travelled to Poznań and Gdańsk for Ireland's games during Euro 2012. Irish fans were named the number one fans by Poles during the 2012 tournament and are remembered fondly for the impression they made on locals.
The match in Warsaw will be the 27th time that the two teams have faced each other, stretching right back to May 1938 when Ireland travelled to Warsaw to be beaten 6-0. In the return match that same year in Dalymount Park, the Irish team were victorious, beating the Poles 3-2.
Connections between Ireland and Poland extend far beyond the football field. The Irish and Polish Governments work closely together on many issues, particularly in the context of the European Union. Economic links have grown very strongly in recent years, with trade between Ireland and Poland worth €2.2 billion in 2014 and growing by around 20% every year. The very large Polish community in Ireland (estimated at about 150,000) has also played a vital role in bringing our countries closer together.
