Ireland-Malawi relations
The Embassy of Ireland in Lilongwe, Malawi, formally opened its doors in 2007. His Excellency Gerry Cunningham is the fourth Irish ambassador accredited in that time.
Ireland’s links with Malawi have been historically strong with a rich tradition of missionaries visiting, and settling, in the country over the last hundred years. These people-to-people links are still strong today through the work of a cohort of Irish people working in the country, often in non-governmental organisations. Several Malawian students have also studied in Ireland through the Irish Aid Fellowship programme.
Irish-Malawian relations were further strengthened through the visit of President Michael D Higgins in November 2014.
