This afternoon (Monday) at the Irish Embassy in London, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Charlie Flanagan TD, will launch the busy and exciting programme of creative, community and commemorative events to take place in Britain to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising and historical events of 1916.
2015 Emigrant Support Programme Funding announced

The Minister of State for the Diaspora, Mr. Jimmy Deenihan T.D., has today announced details of €6.73 million in funding for the Irish community in Britain. Grants have been made to 110 organisations in support of a range of projects for which applications have been received through the Emigrant Support Programme (ESP) operated by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny is in London today to address the Confederation of British Industry Annual Conference. Afterwards, the Taoiseach visited 10 Downing Street where he met with the British Prime Minister David Cameron. The two leaders discussed developments in Northern Ireland, the UK/EU negotiations and economic issues of interest to both Governments.

Ambassador Dan Mulhall appeared before the House of Lords EU Select Committee this afternoon. The Ambassador was one of three EU Ambassadors giving evidence today in the Committee’s inquiry into the UK vision for EU reform.
Yeats 150 – Sailing to Byzantium inspiring art in London

He is visiting Britain for a three day programme that includes the British Irish Association annual conference in Cambridge and a series of engagements in London.

Irish Design 2015 – New Horizon I Architecture from Ireland

When you are old: Yeats at 150 - A talk by the Ambassador at the Newbury Spring Festival
It is a real pleasure for me to be here this afternoon at the Newbury Spring Festival to talk about our national poet, William Butler Yeats, on the 150th anniversary of his birth. We are living through a great era of major anniversaries at present – the outbreak of The First World War last year; Gallipoli and Waterloo this year; next year the Somme and in Ireland the Easter Rising.

I am delighted to be here for two reasons. First, because of my interest in education and second because of my admiration for educators. There is a memorable phrase about education that is often attributed to the great Irish poet WB Yeats, 'education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.' This rings true, even if there is some dispute about the provenance of that quote. Yeats certainly did once say that 'culture does not consist of acquiring opinions, but of getting rid of them'!

It is a pleasure to be part of the Oxford Literary Festival, especially as I am neither a writer nor an academic. I am here because of a lifelong interest in the work of our great Irish poet and Nobel Prize recipient, William Butler Yeats, who was born in Dublin 150 years ago this year. In Ireland throughout the year, we will be paying tribute to Yeats's literary achievement and his contribution to Ireland during his lifetime and in the years since his death in January 1939.
