Major success for International Rules Test, Perth

Saturday 22 November saw the welcome return of the International Rule series, organised by the GAA and the AFL, with a one-off test match played between Australia and Ireland in Perth.

The capacity crowd at Perth’s Patterson Stadium were treated to a fast-paced and exciting game from two sides that had fielded some of their best players to wear the national shirt. While Ireland struggled against a strong Australia team in the first two quarters, their second half revival put them within a few points of the host side, with the final score being 56 – 46 to Australia.

Minister Jimmy Deenihan, who is leading a trade mission to Australia, was on hand to congratulate the Irish team after the match on their heroic performance.

Ambassador Noel White commented after the game:

I am delighted to see the huge crowds here at Patterson Stadium tonight. While we knew there would be plenty of Irish people out to support their team, it is also very gratifying to see the even bigger numbers of Australians supporting this International Series. They were well rewarded this evening with a fantastic game of football with immense skill and athleticism on display.

The International Rules series is sporting diplomacy at its best. I hope to see the format return to a two-test series in 2015.
