Renouncing Irish Citizenship - How do I renounce my citizenship?

You can renounce your Irish citizenship if:

• You are over 18 years of age
• You live outside the State
• You are, or are about to become, a citizen of another country

You need to:

1. Complete a . This form may be obtained by calling the Consulate – 617-267-9330. We will mail the form out to you. Note – to renounce your Irish citizenship before a Consular officer in Boston, you must be a resident of MA, ME, VT, NH, or RI.
2. Get your declaration witnessed (there's a list of acceptable witnesses on the form).
3. 2 Passport photographs which must be signed and dated by the witness.
4. Submit your proof of Irish citizenship
Citizenship through the Foreign Births registration - your original Foreign Births Registration certificate
Citizenship through an Irish-born Parent – your parent’s original civil long form birth and marriage certificates
Citizenship through Post Nuptial Declaration – your original Post Nuptial certificate
Citizenship through Naturalization – your original naturalization certificate
5. Submit your current Irish passport.
6. Submit your current US passport or government issued photo identification.
7. Submit your original civil long form birth certificate.
8. Submit 2 proofs of residence (i.e. utility bills, bank statements, etc).

Forms and documentation may be submitted to the Consulate in Boston through the post or in person by appointment only.
